Computer manufacturer Gateway co-founder dies at 53

Michael Hammond, who co-founded computer manufacturer Gateway, died last Thursday at his Sioux City, Iowa, home. He was 53.

When the New York Times reported the news yesterday, a cause of death had not been determined.

Gateway, which sold computer parts before developing a line of personal computers and selling them directly to consumers, peaked at $4.2 billion in net sales in 2002.

Sales dipped with increasing pressure from Dell and the resurgence of Apple in the personal computer market, and Gateway sold in 2007 to Taiwanese company Acer for $710 million.
