Commuter lots save carpoolers time, money

Posted online
With the national average of gas at $2.55 per gallon, commuters are wondering how they’ll afford the drive to work.

The Missouri Department of Transportation provides parking lots across the state for people to park their cars, catch a ride with a co-worker and carpool to work.

The department maintains 101 commuter lots in Missouri, including a 50-spot gravel lot at Route 65 and Evans Road in Springfield.

The lots are free for commuters, and most are located near interstates or divided highways to allow for a quick pick-up or drop-off between drivers.

“We think sometimes folks don’t realize these lots are free and open to the public,” said Jim Carney, state maintenance engineer, in a news release. “We’re trying to spread the word that people can park their cars there, share a ride with another driver and save money.”

A list of all the department’s commuter lots is available at the department's Web site.
