Commerce names Springfield region chairman

Kansas City-based bank holding company Commerce Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: CBSH) has named a new chairman for the Springfield region of Commerce Bank.

Fred Osborn, who has 26 years of banking experience and currently serves as president of Commerce's Joplin region, will take the position Feb. 1. Osborn succeeds John Himmel, who will continue as vice chairman of Commerce's Springfield region until the end of 2012, when he will retire after 40 years with the company, including the last 11 years as chairman of Commerce in Springfield, according to a news release.

In his new role, Osborn will be responsible for the overall administration of Commerce's Springfield region, which includes branches in Springfield, Bolivar, Branson, Lebanon, Nixa, Ozark, Republic and Willard.

“We are pleased to have Fred serve in this very important leadership role for Commerce Bank in Springfield," Commerce Bancshares Vice Chairman Seth Leadbeater said in the release. "Fred has shown strong leadership in our Joplin region and is well qualified to lead the Springfield region."

Bob Hammerschmidt, who has 37 years of banking experience, will remain president of the Springfield market.

Osborn has been active in the Joplin community serving as vice president on the boards of the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity and the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Clive Veri, commercial banking division manager in Joplin, will replace Osborn as president of the Joplin region.

Commerce Bancshares operates more than 360 bank branches in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.  

As of 9:55 a.m., the company's shares were trading at $38.17, compared to a 52-week range of $33.06 to $44.
