CMH assumes ER operations

Citizens Memorial Hospital announced plans to transition its emergency department operations in-house.

Starting Aug. 1, CMH will assume staffing and scheduling management for the emergency room, according to a news release. Triad Physician Solutions has been the ER’s contracted staffing management provider since August 2019.

“The large majority of our medical staff is employed by CMH. One exception is the emergency department,” CMH CEO Michael Calhoun said in the release. “The emergency department is the front door of CMH, and we want to make sure we do a great job serving the community and our patients.

“Focusing on building our own group of physicians that are aligned with CMH values, we can work together to improve care."

Dr. Andrew Nicholes is the interim medical director for the emergency department, and CMH will be recruiting additional medical staff over the coming months.

A new emergency department is part of $77 million in investments CMH plans to make at its Bolivar campus, according to past reporting.

The updated emergency room would have 21 patient rooms, compared with 12 currently, and the ability to care for more than 70 patients daily, according to the release.

"Along with that, we’ll also have more provider coverage from physicians and advanced practice providers. That will decrease wait times and improve access to care providers in emergency situations," Calhoun said in the release. "It is strategically important to us to work on our own recruiting to make sure we have enough medical providers to staff our ER.”
