Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton secured narrow victories yesterday in the Missouri primaries despite Greene County majorities for their opponents.
Trump received 382,093 votes, or 40.8 percent statewide, compared to leading Republican competitor Ted Cruz, who earned 380,367 votes, or 40.6 percent, according to the Missouri secretary of state’s
website.
In total, 935,794 Republican voters visited the polls.
On the Democratic side, Clinton won with 310,602 votes, or 49.6 percent of the state’s total. Bernie Sanders received 309,071 votes, or 49.4 percent.
The party had 626,075 voters yesterday across Missouri, according to the secretary of state.
Greene County voters had different candidates in mind.
The unofficial election results posted to the Greene County clerk’s
website put Cruz and Sanders ahead.
In the county, Cruz earned 26,784 votes, or 51.7 percent. Trump had 16,649 votes, or 32.1 percent.
Sanders won the county with 17,403 votes, or 61.1 percent, compared to Clinton’s 10,910 votes, or 38.3 percent.
Trump now leads in the primaries with 646 Republican delegates, and Clinton leads the Democratic vote with 1,599 delegates, according to election coverage by The Associated Press.
