City seeks feedback on Galloway Village development

The city of Springfield is gathering stakeholder and resident feedback for the future development of Galloway Village.

The series of meetings and an online survey come amid a development moratorium passed in November 2018 by Springfield City Council. The 270-day moratorium is scheduled to end Aug. 2. City officials are seeking input after a 2014 blight study and redevelopment plan for the area led to a rise in construction projects that uncovered issues with the area’s topography, according to a news release.

In the quaint southeast Springfield neighborhood, at least $21 million in projects were completed or started during 2018, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

The city first held a meeting in February with the Galloway Village Neighborhood Association and other stakeholders to plan the community engagement process. An online survey is available on the city’s website, and the first of three public input meetings is scheduled 5:30 p.m. March 21 at All Saints Anglican Church, 2751 E. Galloway St.

“We have a great group of folks who are interested in seeing all the possibilities for Galloway while preserving the village’s history and unique character and charm,” said Springfield Senior Planner Olivia Hough, who’s leading the Galloway feedback process, in the release. “Along with people who have chosen to live or do business in Galloway in recent years, we have families who have lived there for generations, starting at the turn of the century when Galloway was a company town operated by the quarry. We look forward to hearing all of the input from this wonderful varied group.”

The Galloway Village Neighborhood Association’s service area comprises Battlefield Road to the north, James River Freeway to the south, U.S. Highway 65 to the east and Glenstone Avenue to the west.

Council in November 2018 approved a rezoning of 8 acres at 2700 E. Battlefield Road after nearly four months of opposition from area residents. Medical offices are planned for the parcel, according to SBJ reporting.
