City sales tax check for August up 14%

Posted online
The city of Springfield's 1 percent sales tax check from the Missouri Department of Revenue was $2.4 million for August, a 14 percent bump compared to the $2.1 million payment in the same month of 2013.

Representing sales processing by the state in July from transactions made largely in May and June, the August check compared favorably to the city's budget of $2.1 million for the month, according to a news release.

The latest check brings fiscal 2014 sales tax revenue to $40.5 million, exceeding the budgeted projection of $39.7 million.

According to the release, roughly 60 percent of Springfield's general fund revenue comes from sales and use taxes.

"The city heavily relies on sales tax revenues as its main source of revenue to fund vital services, such as police and fire operations," according to the release.
