City manager candidates meet with public

Members of the community filled downtown’s Park Central Square Branch Library this morning to get to know the three candidates for Springfield city manager.

Several dozen people turned out for the “Coffee with the Candidates” event put on by the city.

Another opportunity to meet the finalists is an ice cream social at 5:45–7 p.m. today at the Phelps Grove Park pavilion. The park is between National and Kimbrough avenues north of Bennett Street.

The three city manager candidates are: Greg Burris, vice president for administrative and information services at Missouri State University (pictured at top, with Springfield R-XII School District Superintendent Norm Ridder, left); Kent Myers, city manager of Hot Springs, Ark. (pictured at middle, with councilman Denny Whayne, left); and Larry Stevens, city manager of Edmond, Okla. (pictured at bottom, with Don Tillman, right). Click here for more on each finalist.

The trio arrived in Springfield on Sunday, and today they are going through a series of interviews with City Council and the city’s management team, according to a news release. The city expects to announce a hiring decision this week.
