City clerk certifies Springfield council candidates

Posted online
The Springfield city clerk’s office completed the certification process for hopeful council members after the filing period ended Tuesday.

Assistant City Clerk Anita Cotter said via email three applications did not meet the qualifications for certification: Danny Lee Henderson for mayor and Allen Kemper and Jared Tucker for General Seat C.

To meet standards, individuals must be qualified voters of the city, a resident for at least two years prior to their election and a resident of their respective zone if they apply for a zone seat. Zone petitions must contain 100 signatures from registered voters from the area, while general petitions must have 200 signatures of voters within city limits, according to a news release.

Ten candidates successfully completed their applications to enter the running for council seats in the April 7 general municipal election. Five of the nine council seats are up for grabs.

The candidates:
  • Mayor Bob Stephens seeks re-election and will run against Steven Reed, who was one of 400 employees laid off when Dillons exited Springfield.
  • For General Seat C, which is currently occupied by Doug Burlison, Kristi Fulnecky, owner of Fulnecky Enterprises LLC, will run against Len Eagleburger, a retired union leader.
  • Ken McClure, Missouri State University’s vice president for administrative and information services, is the sole candidate for General Seat D, which is currently occupied by Mike Carroll.
  • For Cindy Rushefsky’s Zone 2 seat, Buck Van Hooser, an account executive at Journal Broadcast Group; Justin Burnett, a department head at a Mardel Christian & Education location; and Josh Mareschal, an attorney at McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips PA, will square off.
  • Councilman Jerry Compton seeks re-election for his Zone 3 seat and will run against Mike Schilling, a former Missouri state representative and an adjunct professor of political science at Ozarks Technical Community College.
