Christian County grows by 43 percent in last decade

Christian County was the fastest growing county in Missouri during the last decade, while Greene County was up 14.5 percent as the fourth most populous county, according to Census figures released Feb. 24.

The U.S. Census Bureau found Christian County's population grew by 43 percent to 77,422 people.

Missouri's population grew by 7 percent to 5,988,927, up 393,716 compared to the last Census in 2000. Nationally, population grew by 10 percent during the decade to 308,745,538, as of April 1, 2010.

Springfield grew by 5.2 percent between 2000 and 2010 and continues to be the third most populated city in Missouri.

Census counts showed the top five most populated Missouri cities as:
  • Kansas City at 459,787, a 4.1 percent increase from the 2000 Census figures;
  • St. Louis at 319,294, an 8.3 percent decrease;
  • Springfield at 159,498, a 5.2 percent increase;
  • Independence at 116,830, a 3.1 percent increase; and
  • Columbia at 108,500, a 28.4 percent increase.
The 2010 figures showed the top five most populated counties as:
*St. Louis County at 998,954, a decrease of 1.7 percent since 2000;
*Jackson County at 674,158, an increase of 2.9 percent;
*St. Charles County at 360,485, an increase of 27 percent;
*Greene County at 275,174, an increase of 14.5 percent; and
*Clay County at 221,939, an increase of 20.6 percent.

Statewide population by race showed that 82.8 percent of Missouri citizens are white; 11.6 percent are black; 3.5 percent are Hispanic or Latino; 2.1 percent are two or more races; 1.6 percent are Asian; 0.5 percent are are American Indian or Alaska Native; 0.1 percent are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander; and 1.3 percent belong to another race.
