China's middle class is booming

China’s middle class is ballooning, and it has U.S. voters worried.
 
Between 1988 and 2008, China’s middle class experienced income growth of 70 percent, compared to 4 percent for Americans over the same time period, according to economist Branko Milanovic.
 
World Bank data show the average Chinese family earns about $8,000 per year, less than the average household income of $54,000 in the U.S.
 
Meanwhile, the number of American voters concerned about the effects of free trade details between the U.S. and other countries is climbing. A March poll by Pew Research Center shows the percentage of voters who consider free trade a “bad thing” has edged up from 30 percent in 2014 to 39 percent in 2016.
