China plans to "react with firm countermeasures" after the United States abruptly ordered the closure of the country's consulate in Houston, Texas.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, called the move an "unprecedented escalation."
State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said the closure decision was made "to protect American intellectual property and American's private information."
Documents reportedly were seen burning in a courtyard at the consulate on Tuesday night.
