China’s legislature on Thursday approved a resolution to override Hong Kong's partial autonomy.
The legislation is designed to "establish and enhance the legal framework and enforcement mechanisms for national security” in Hong Kong, according to state broadcaster China Central Television.
Chinese officials said the resolution safeguards national security after protests in Hong Kong threatened the country's sovereignty. Opposition politicians and rights activists in Hong Kong said the resolution undercuts the territory’s system of self-governance.
