China temporarily bans British cheese imports

Posted online
Chinese citizens may have a harder time getting a hold of a nice block of cheddar soon.

According to a report from BBC News, China has temporarily banned imports of British cheese after the country's food inspectors complained about hygiene standards. The Chinese officials were reportedly dissatisfied with its maintenance and storage, raw milk transport temperatures and air sanitization. However, the dairy they visited does not export its produce to China.

The Brits export about 11 tons of cheese to China annually, but the poundage makes up less than 1 percent of total exports.

The ban applies to all cheese made after May 1.
