China silences property mogul on social media

The Chinese government has deleted the popular microblog account of Ren Zhiqiang, a property mogul and outspoken critic of President Xi Jinping.

The Cyberspace Administration of China yesterday ordered Chinese technology companies Sina and Tencent to take offline Ren's microblog accounts.

"Cyberspace is not outside of the law, and no person is allowed to use the Internet to spread illegal information," Jiang Jun, a spokesman for the cyberspace agency, said in a statement.

With 37 million followers, Ren posted messages earlier this month saying China's news media should represent the public's interests, rather than just those of the ruling Communist Party.
