China lifts one-child policy

Posted online
Chinese parents rejoice – you can now have two children.

China lifted its long-time and controversial one-child policy on Thursday amid growing pressure of a rapidly aging population.

The Washington Post reports the move, which came after a meeting of the Communist Party leadership, reflected concerns about potential labor shortages and rising numbers of elderly people that would greatly strain the economy in the years ahead.

The unpopular one-child rule was introduced in 1980 and according to the Post, was enforced through huge fines, forced sterilizations and abortions. It also skewed the country’s male to female ratio, as male babies were considered more valuable.

It is unclear when the new policy would take effect.
