China, Japan top list of foreign U.S. securities owners

At the end of July, foreign holders of U.S. Treasury securities totaled close to $5.6 trillion.

Topping the list was China, at $1.28 trillion, followed by Japan, at $1.14 trillion, and Caribbean bankers, at $288 billion, according to CNNMoney. The bankers include centers in the Bahamas, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Netherlands Antilles and Panama.

Rounding out the top five is Taiwan, at $186 billion, and Switzerland, $176 billion.
