Chicago to hire nearly 1,000 cops

The Chicago Police Department is hiring nearly 1,000 cops to combat a 50 percent spike in homicides and improve detectives’ ability to solve crimes, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The biggest hiring surge since the mid-1980s, the department plans to bring on 970 new officers during the next two years.

Chicago is spending around $134 million to pay for the new officers' salaries, benefits and supervision.
