Chicago mayor dismisses police superintendent

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced yesterday he dismissed Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

McCarthy and the city have come under fire after the release of a tape showing a white cop shooting a black suspect 16 times.

"Now is the time for fresh eyes and leadership," Emanuel said at a news conference.

John Escalante, chief of detectives, has been named interim police chief.
