U.S. health insurer Centene announced it would purchase WellCare Health Plans for $15.3 billion.
The cash-and-stock deal announcement pushed WellCare's shares up 23 percent, while Centene fell 7 percent in the opening hours Wednesday.
Centene would grow its Medicaid business and expand into Medicare Advantage with the purchase.
