The United States' official unemployment rate in May was 5.8 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey.
According to data, in the last decade the unemployment rate has ranged from 7.7 percent in July 1992 to 3.9 percent in April and October 2000.
The next survey will be conducted the week of July 14, when nearly 2,000 Census Bureau field representatives will conduct interviews at about 57,000 households across the country. Participating households are randomly selected, and in effect, represent all 281 million households in the United States. Statistics from that survey will be released Aug. 2.
