Susan Monarez, who was sworn in as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a month ago, is refusing to step down after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attempted to fire her.
Monarez first declined to leave because the directive did not come from the president. A presidential spokesperson later said Monarez was “not aligned with the president’s agenda of making America healthy again."
An attorney for Monarez said the firing is "legally deficient" because President Donald Trump did not announce it.
People familiar with the matter said Monarez and Kennedy have clashed over vaccine policy.
