Caterpillar profit rises 44%

Caterpillar Inc. said its fourth-quarter earnings rose 44 percent as the heavy-equipment maker cut costs to help offset a continuing decline in mining-machinery revenue.

The company reported profits of $1 billion, and revenue of $14.4 billion.
