The city of Carthage will soon be able to make infrastructure improvements to its downtown, thanks in part to a state grant.
The Missouri Department of Economic Development has awarded a $130,950 downtown revitalization grant through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program to Carthage, located in Jasper County, according to a May 24 Missouri Department of Economic Development news release.
Plans call for the replacement of sidewalks and curbs in the downtown block that is bound by Main Street, Fourth Street, Lyons Street and Third Street.
"The CDBG program is an invaluable resource for our communities seeking to increase their economic viability through infrastructure improvements," said DED Director Kelvin L. Simmons. "I commend Carthage officials and residents for taking the initiative to apply for these funds and better their community through downtown revitalization."
Curb and sidewalk replacement will begin on Third Street and will continue until the entire block is complete. Ramps will also be installed to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The sidewalks currently in the area are in a state of disrepair, dangerous to the public and not meeting city code. New sidewalks will improve the appearance, safety and accessibility to the businesses.
In addition to CDBG funds, the project will be paid for by private funds and in-kind sources. Another partner, Main Street Carthage Inc., prepared the application on behalf of Carthage.
CDBG funds are provided through federal sources and administered by the state of Missouri. Funds will be released to Carthage as certain requirements set forth by the program are met. The Community Development Block Grant program provides economic development grants and loan funds to cities with a population under 50,000 and counties under 200,000 to help Missouri communities address public health and safety concerns.
