This structure, which measures about 7,850 square feet in size, will provide office space, a classroom and a laboratory for the Carpenters' District Council of Kansas City and vicinity. It will provide space for the council's apprenticeship program, which is a four-year training program that allows participants to have classroom training and to get paid while doing hands-on carpentry work.
According to Danny Hyde, business representative for the council, there are now 80 apprentices in the program. They will use the center's classroom on a rotating basis, also spending time in the lab area learning such things as woodworking and welding. The apprentices also are getting hands-on experience working with general contractor Carson Mitchell on the project.
The estimated construction cost for the center is $600,000, and it is scheduled for completion April 1. The building is made of pre-cast concrete forms that were poured and raised on site. It was designed by Werner & Associates.
