Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced Kitzi's new position Feb. 6.
“I'm proud of the work the securities division has done over the past year to protect Missourians' retirement and life savings from investment fraud,” Carnahan said in a news release. “Matt's experience will serve him well as the commissioner of securities, and I look forward to the division's continued success under his leadership.”
Kitzi holds a bachelor's degree in international business from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and a juris doctor with distinction from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.
He began working for the secretary of state's office in January 2005 as the director of corporations and counsel to the business services division.
Prior to that, Kitzi worked in the corporate law and public law and finance groups at the law firm of Armstrong Teasdale in Kansas City.
There, Kitzi worked on a wide range of corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and issuances of securities instruments.
Kitzi also served as a city attorney for several municipalities in the western half of the state.
“Over the past year, the securities division of the secretary of state's office has been particularly aggresasive in standing up for consumers by cracking down on individuals or firms who try to defraud Missourians out of their hard-earned money,” Kitzi said in the release. “I look forward to serving Missouri investors in this important role.”
