Another major business has been frightened off by unsafe conditions in Mexico.
Canada’s Pan American Silver Corp. is pulling back on operations of its mine in northern Mexico, citing activity of drug cartels in the area. According to Associated Press reports, workers over the weekend were holed up at the mine, threatened by armed groups and some were evacuated on private planes.
Earlier in May, one of Mexico’s largest food products companies, Lala, suspended operations at a distribution center for security reasons, and in April, Mexico’s largest Coca-Cola bottler indefinitely suspended operations. The violence is reportedly from fighting between factions of the Zetas, known as the Northeast cartel and the Old School Zetas.
