Campbell Fassnight Creek construction complete

Posted online
The Campbell Avenue bridge over Fassnight Creek between Sunshine Street and Grand Street reopened during the weekend after more than four months of construction.

Construction on the new bridge - its structure designed to hold three times the amount of water of the old bridge in case of a flood - began in June and finished ahead of schedule.

"They were hoping to have it open by Thanksgiving," Mike Brothers, city of Springfield co-interim director of public information, said of contractor Hartman and Co.

The construction also included accommodation of the developing Fassnight Greenway Trail and an arched stonework appearance, according to a city news release.

The construction is part of the approximately $4.5 million Fassnight Park Waterway Improvement Project, meant to reduce flooding, provide water quality benefits and maintain the park's historical appearance. The full project is expected to be completed by August 2011 and is being paid for by the 2006 County-wide Parks Sales Tax, an Environmental Protection Agency grant and a federal transportation enhancement grant, the release said.

In accordance with the project, the Main Avenue bridge in Fassnight Park is currently under construction, and the Grant Avenue bridge also is set to be revitalized.

Portions of Meadowmere Street, for approximately two weeks, and Grant Avenue, for approximately four months, will be closed as the project finishes up. The exact close dates haven't yet been confirmed, but information will be placed online as it becomes available.
