Calorie labels on menus delayed again – to next year

Posted online
How many calories are in that double cheeseburger? It might be 2017 before you figure it out.

According to The Washington Post, the Food and Drug Administration announced this month it will delay enforcement of menu labeling rules – again – until next year. Passed as part of the health care overhaul in 2010, the rules would eventually require restaurants and other establishments that sell prepared foods and have 20 or more locations to post the calorie content of food “clearly and conspicuously” on their menus, menu boards and displays.

Some restaurants, such as McDonald's, complied with the rule years ago, but other restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores have fought the rule tooth and nail.

The rules were originally set to take effect in 2015, but that was pushed to 2016. The new delay will leave final implementation to the next president.
