California’s last nuclear plant to shutter, edged out by renewables

The pending closure of California’s last nuclear power plant may be a sign of things to come, as the depreciating cost of renewable energy forces more U.S. reactors into retirement.
 
PG&E Corp.’s Diablo Canyon reactors, located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, are scheduled to go offline in 2024 and 2025.
 
PG&E’s $2 billion investment would join three other reactors – two in Illinois and another in Nebraska – announced this month to eventually shutter in the wake of decreasing wind and solar energy prices.
