California sues Uber, Lyft

The state of California filed a lawsuit against ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft.

The suit alleges the companies violated a new state law by misclassifying hundreds of thousands of drivers as independent contractors, rather than employees as required under the legislation.

A Barclays estimate predicts Uber would lose $506 million and Lyft $290 million annually by classifying drivers as employees.
