A Los Angeles Superior Court judge said coffee companies, including Starbucks, haven’t provided sufficient evidence that coffee is not bad for human consumption, and now sellers in the state must post cancer warnings.
The lawsuit is between a small nonprofit, the Council for Education and Research on Toxics, and some 90 companies collectively known as Big Coffee. According to The Associated Press, at issue is the acrylamide chemical produced in the bean roasting process. It is a known carcinogen, and potato chip makers removed acrylamide from their process years ago in a suit on similar claims.
