California has dropped plans to place a tax on text messages.
Officials with the California Public Utilities Commission said a new ruling from the Federal Communications Commission prevents the state from putting taxes on text messages.
A Dec. 12 FCC rule classifies text messages as an "information service" — not a "telecommunications service."
