Calendar: Drury continues post-9/11 convocation series

Oct. 9

Branson’s IMAX entertainment complex presents one of three world premiere screenings of “One Night With the King,” chronicling the life of the Bible character Esther. The event begins at 7 p.m. with hosts Dino and Cheryl Kartsonakis. The movie begins at 7:40 p.m., with excerpts of the evening’s festivities and exit interviews with attendees aired live on Trinity Broadcast Network. A limited number of tickets to the world premiere event are available by calling (800) 419-4832. Beginning Oct. 11, the film will play nightly at IMAX.

Oct. 12 & Oct. 13

College of the Ozarks’ Dobyns Dining Room in the Keeter Center presents the Do Ron Ron Dinner. A single seating will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12, and seatings will be at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 13. Each sitting features a four-course meal and a live 90-minute performance of music from the 1950s and 1960s by the C of O music department. Tickets are $24.95. A 15 percent discount will be given to anyone who attends in period dress. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required. Oct. 19

Organist Istvan Ruppert performs at 7:30 p.m. in Stone Chapel on the Drury University campus. Ruppert, an organist at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary, has performed in music centers and churches around the world. For more information, call Earline Moulder at (417) 873-7376.

Queen City Sertoma Club presents its 2006 Holiday Wreath Sale to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield. Sertoma is offering an assortment of fresh-cut, fragrant holiday wreaths, swags, centerpieces and garland at varying prices. Direct-ship items are available for holiday gifts. Oct. 9

June Rae Wood, author of “The Man Who Loved Clowns,” is the featured speaker at 7 p.m. for the kickoff of the Springfield-Greene County Library District’s Big Read 2007. Rae will speak at 7 p.m. at the Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd. Wood’s book is the featured work for the Big Read, during which it is to be read and discussed by the community. Oct. 12

Flavor of the Ozarks, a tasting to benefit St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the education fund of the Springfield/Branson chapter of the Missouri Restaurant Association, is 5:30 p.m. in the White River Room at Bass Pro Shops. Participating restaurants include Hemingway’s Blue Water Café, Rib Crib, Village Inn, Fire & Ice and Ocean Zen. The event also features live and silent auctions and live entertainment, including Nixa City Limits and Mark Chapman. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Oct. 17

Nixa community leaders present a State of the Community dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the commons area of Nixa High School, 514 S. Nicholas Road. Representatives of the schools, city, county and state governments, and the Nixa Area Chamber of Commerce will discuss community issues, provide updates on ongoing projects and share their visions for the future of the Nixa community. Oct. 19

Eric Posner, a law professor at the University of Chicago, speaks at 11 a.m. in Clara Thompson Hall on the Drury University campus. Posner’s visit is part of Drury’s Liberty and Security in a Post-9/11 World convocation series. Posner, an author of several books, maintains that the existing laws of war embodied in the Geneva Convention do not apply to terrorism. His current research is focused on immigration, international and foreign relations law. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Small Business Development Center at Missouri State University kicks off its Human Resources Legal Issues Series

9 a.m.–noon with Personnel Law: Hiring & Firing. The second session, Establishing Human Resources & Record-keeping, is 9 a.m.–noon Oct. 19, and the third, Personnel Law: Common HR Mistakes & Hot Topics, is 9 a.m.–noon Oct. 26.
