Cabela’s acquisition leaves home town uncertain

Sidney, Nebraska, residents are waiting with bated breath to see what will happen when Bass Pro Shops buys Cabela’s for $5.5 billion.

At 2,000 jobs, Cabela's employs a third of the people in town.

Some business owners on Sidney’s main thoroughfare say sales have been slow as people have cut back on spending as they wait for news on what will happen to the jobs. Some have already begun to look elsewhere for jobs.

Some 200 homes are for sale in the town of 6,800. Sellers say buyers aren't interested, so home prices have taken a hit.

Bass Pro officials have said the company will keep “significant” operations in Sidney, but in a meeting with employees earlier this year, CEO Johnny Morris made it clear there will be cuts.
