Butterball LLC this week announced it would slash its workforce by more than half at its Carthage plant.
Officials with the company said 450 of its 850 employees at the plant would be laid off over several months starting no sooner than March 1.
“Long-term adverse conditions in the commodities market, where Butterball has routinely sold excess protein produced at the (Carthage) facility, has resulted in the need to ramp down certain production processes at this location," officials said in a statement.
