Bumble Bee charged in gruesome worker oven death

Posted online
Felony criminal charges have been filed against Bumble Bee Foods for the October 2012 death of a worker at a California plant, CNNMoney reports.

Charges filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office accuse the company and two employees of "willfully" violating safety rules in the death of Jose Melena. Melena died after being trapped inside of a sterilization oven that was loaded with cans of tuna and heated to 270 degrees. His burned remains were discovered by coworkers who were unaware Melena had been sent into the oven to clean it.

Bumble Bee stated no willful violations were discovered by the state's OSHA office during its investigation of the accident and that it is exploring its legal options. Bumble Bee faces a maximum fine of $1.5 million; the two workers could be sentenced to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted, CNNMoney reports.
