Evangel University president steps down

Mike Rakes will step down as president of Evangel University, the institution’s Board of Trustees announced July 30.

Evangel said Rakes decided his season of leadership had come to an end. The board accepted his resignation.

“Serving as president of Evangel University has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Rakes said in a news release. “As Darla and I begin the next chapter of our lives, we do so with hearts overflowing with gratitude. We leave blessed because of the friendships we have formed and the privilege of walking this journey with you.”

Rakes’ exit comes a month after Evangel confirmed plans to cut 40 positions as part of an effort to reduce spending by $10 million in operating expenses.

Michael Kolstad, a longtime Evangel employee who was serving as executive vice president and chief of staff, will serve as interim president, the board announced.

In the coming months, the board will begin a search process for the next Evangel president.

Evangel officials said its core mission, biblical foundation and academic commitment remain unchanged. Campus events, student financial aid, academic programs and athletic operations are expected to continue without interruption.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank Dr. Mike Rakes for his service and dedication to Evangel University. We are grateful for his contributions to our students and the Evangel community,” said Josh Bartlotti, chair of the university’s board, in a release. “As we move forward, the board remains committed to Evangel’s Christ-centered mission and is confident in the university’s future. We ask our community to join us in praying for Dr. Rakes and his family, as well as for Evangel during this time of transition.”

Evangel reported a fall headcount of 2,741 students, an increase of 4.6% over the prior year. The estimated tuition and fees for the 2026-27 year are nearly $32,000.
