Costco plans Springfield market entry

Posted online

Costco Wholesale Corp. (Nasdaq: COST) is planning to put down roots in east Springfield, Mayor Ken McClure announced this morning.

“I’m pleased to announce and also confirm the rumors are true that Costco Wholesale Corp. is considering a membership warehouse retail store in Springfield,” McClure said in a news release. “We are so pleased to welcome Costco to our community."

The Issaquah, Washington-based company intends to build on the southeast corner of Chestnut Expressway and U.S. Highway 65, across from a Menards store that opened in August 2018.

Springfield City Council on June 1 is slated to consider an ordinance authorizing an access and infrastructure agreement for an estimated $4.8 million in required public improvements at the site. If approved, Costco would be reimbursed for the improvements by the city through a portion of sales taxes generated by the store. Additionally, the Springfield Planning and Zoning Commission on June 4 is scheduled to consider a preliminary plat and a final development plan for the store and the so-called Kirkland Commons.

Costco expects to break ground in spring 2021 and open the store in fall 2021, according to the release. The company plans to hire at least 125 employees – and possibly more than 200 as sales grow – for the store.

"We know that there has been a strong interest from our citizens for this store and, in fact, that some Springfieldians drive the 150 miles to get to the nearest Costco," McClure said in the release. "I am positive that Costco will expand our retail base, bringing new customers to Springfield who will surely shop elsewhere while they’re in town."

Rumors have circulated in earnest since at least last year about a Costco store coming to town. Store officials last year would not confirm their plans with Springfield Business Journal.
