The flags will be presented to the American Legion Post No. 637 in Kimberling City for proper disposal.
“While Old Glory may be mended when torn and cleaned when dirty, the United States Flag Code states that the flag, when it is in a condition that is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way,” said Tom Goldsworthy, vice chairman of the task force’s board of directors, in a news release.
Many of the flags that will be retired in the American Legion’s annual Flag Day Ceremony are to come from the Avenue of Freedom, which stretches from the corner of Gretna Road and Missouri 248 to the bridge at Gretna Road and Roark Valley Road. Through an agreement with the city of Branson, the task force maintains the Avenue of Freedom, where a total of 92 American flags have flown on lampposts since 2001.
