In 2002, Branson experienced its best year yet in terms of tourism revenues and number of visitors to the Tri-Lakes area, according to a nationally syndicated research study conducted by D. K. Shifflet.
Revenues were up 9 percent over 2001 and tourist counts totaled 8.2 million, the study said. Branson collected almost $10.94 million in fiscal year 2002, compared to $10.02 million in 2001.
At of the start of 2002, Branson had 49 theaters with 61,714 seats, 209 lodging facilities with 17,699 rooms, and 389 restaurants with 33,930 seats, according to Branson's Health and Finance Department.
The city received national recognition this year from the National Motorcoach Network as the "Motorcoach Destination of the Decade." Branson was also named the "Best All-Round City for Motorcoach Travel" by the American Bus Association and voted the "Most Patriotic City in America" by the American Legion.
Mayor Lou Schaefer said "excitement continues to build for the proposed waterfront entertainment district and convention center," according to a news release.
Groundbreaking for that project should occur in spring with a scheduled completion date of spring 2005.
