The city of Branson is shifting credit card fees to customers as it faces an "increasingly unsustainable expense," according to spokesperson Melody Pettit.
Pettit said that for 2020, the city's credit card fee expense is nearly $100,000. That's up by around 70% compared with five years ago, she said.
Starting Jan. 6, individuals who use a credit card for payments to the city also will be responsible for a "convenience fee," according to a news release. It’s unclear if debit card transactions are affected, and Pettit could not immediately be reached for follow-up comment by deadline.
Utility customers will see a $3 charge for each individual payment and a $2 charge for electronic checks. All other credit card payments will be subject to a 2.75% fee.
Officials said in the release customers can avoid the fees by setting up an automatic bank draft.
Other common payments made to the city are for parks expenses, business licenses, and cigarette and tourism taxes.
Taking shape on 3.5 acres just east of State Highway H/Glenstone Avenue in the area of Valley Water Mill Park are the Fulbright Heights Apartments – three 23,000-square-foot buildings with 24 units each for a total of 72 one- and two-bedroom apartments.
Actually, the city is the one who gets the convenience of receiving regular, timely payment by setting up the credit card payments. Companies are pushing customers to do this. That is why there isn't a fee. They don't want to have to wait on checks or have to deposit them etc.
