Branson chamber issues community awards

The Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce/ Convention & Visitors Bureau announced the recipients of the 2006 community awards at the chamber’s 60th annual Black Tie Celebration. The event was held Feb. 16 at Chateau on the Lake in Branson.

The Mary Award, a community service award named in honor of first recipients Mary Herschend and Mary Trimble, was presented to Shirley Mullen, director of Pregnancy Life Line, for her community involvement.

The Pioneer Award, recognizing outstanding service to the community, was given to Lloyd Presley, founder of Presleys’ Country Jubilee. Presley and his family created Branson’s first show on the Highway 76 strip and have been entertaining audiences for 40 years.

The Ambassador Award, acknowledging an individual who has brought attention to the Branson area, was presented to Candy Sullinger, president of the Branson Park Board.

Her efforts on the board were instrumental in the construction of Branson’s Rec Plex. Sullinger is sports information director at College of the Ozarks and serves as co-director of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ annual basketball tournament at the school.

The Beautification Award, honoring individuals or organizations that enhance the appearance of the community, was awarded to Branson’s Best for an outstanding job of landscaping and maintaining its property.

The Community Spirit Award, recognizing efforts above and beyond the norm to benefit the Branson community, was given to Joan Westfall, executive director of Christian Action Ministries.

A special recognition award was given to former chamber chairman Chris Lucchi for his dedication to the tourism industry.

In internal news, the Branson chamber and CVB hired Jack Walker as director of tourism development. His duties include managing and developing community events; researching, creating and implementing citywide festivals and events; working with CVB advisory committees; managing event staff; and contributing to CVB marketing plans. Walker has more than 15 years of experience in the festival, sports and entertainment industry, both as a paid professional and a volunteer.[[In-content Ad]]
