The second chapter of the vacant Builder's Square building story is being written.
Borders Group Inc. filed a building permit with the city of Springfield the week of June 17-21 for a $370,000 infill at 3300 S. Glenstone Ave. in Primrose Marketplace.
In May, Bed Bath and Beyond confirmed it would lease 30,000 square feet there and open by the end of the year.
Borders could not be reached for comment, but the building permit stated the company will open a Borders Books Music Caf. According to the company Web site, Borders sells books, music, movies and other information and entertainment items.
The global company, with headquarters in Ann Arbor, Mich., operates more than 370 Borders Books and Music stores in the United States, as well as 22 international Borders stores, approximately 800 Waldenbooks locations and 36 United Kingdom-based Books etc. stores. Borders Group employs more than 32,000 people worldwide and posted revenues of approximately $3.4 billion in 2001, the Web site stated.
It is a Fortune 500 company publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BGP.
General contractor on the project is Brentwood, Tenn.-based Dooley & Mack Constructors Inc.
Kimco Realty Corporation, out of Kettering, Ohio, owns Primrose Market-place. Kimco purchased the center in Dec. 1994. The Builder's Square site is more than 80,000 square feet in size.
Another Kimco-owned project performed by Dooley & Mack in Springfield was the $200,000 renovation of the former Colonel Days building at Battlefield and Glenstone. A software retailer and a cellular chain now occupy the building.
