Boeing says it's created world's lightest metal

Posted online
Aerospace manufacturer Boeing says it's created the world's lightest metal structure.

The material, called microlattice, is said to be 99.99 percent hollow and can sit atop a dandelion. The company claims the material - a 3D open-cellular polymer structure - is 100 times lighter than styrofoam and could be the future for aeronautical design.

Sophia Yang, a research scientist at HRL Labs who worked with Boeing on the project, claims if wrapped around an egg, the impact-absorbing properties of microlattice could protect it from cracking when dropped from 25 stories.
