BMW hit with $40M penalty for safety lapses

Posted online
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined BMW $10 million as part of a $40 million settlement surrounding the company’s 2014 and 2015 models of the Mini Cooper.

The NHTSA found the German automaker failed to issue a recall within five days of learning the vehicles failed to meet minimum standards for side-impact crash protection. The company also admitted it failed to provide accurate information to the NHTSA about the recalls.

BMW also paid $3 million in 2012 for similar problems.

In addition to the $10 million fine, BMW is required to spend at least $10 million meeting performance obligations and $20 million in deferred penalties if it fails to comply with the order or violates other safety regulations, according to Fortune.
