Blunt raises base wage for tipped workers

Posted online
Gov. Matt Blunt on Wednesday directed the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations to increase the base wage for Missouri’s tipped employees, after having reviewed the department’s initial interpretation of the new minimum wage law.

The base wage for tipped employees has been raised to $3.25 per hour from the federal rate of $2.13 per hour.

Missouri voters in November approved an increase in the state’s minimum wage to $6.50 per hour from $5.15 per hour. The department’s assessment of the law kept the base wage at $2.13 per hour, but Blunt disagreed, saying the law requires all employers to pay tipped employees half of the minimum wage, according to a news release from his office.
