Blunt, Mexican leaders discuss Missouri export facility

Posted online
Gov. Matt Blunt returned to Missouri Tuesday from a trip to Mexico where he led a trade mission to strengthen the state’s relationship with its second-largest trading partner, after Canada.

Blunt and several Missouri delegates met with Mexican leaders, including President Felipe Calderón, about starting a Mexican Customs Port Facility in Kansas City. The SmartPort would be the first of its kind in the United States and would allow exported goods to be cleared through Kansas City instead of along the United States/Mexico border, according to a news release.

Missouri’s exports continue to rise. As of November 2006, last year’s products exported by Missouri companies totaled $9.1 billion – not far from the 2005 record of $10.5 billion.

Top-performing export categories include transportation equipment, chemicals, machinery, food and kindred products, and electrical equipment.
