Blog: The hottest fashion trend of the season? Bass Pro hats make a statement

Posted online

It seems like when Springfield, Missouri, makes national news, it's rarely for a good reason.

Thankfully, this isn't one of those times.

Turns out, Springfield-based Bass Pro Shops' super-inexpensive trucker hats are very in vogue this season.

At $6 apiece for an adult-sized hat, Bass Pro offers a host of colors with its logo and a big bass fish inside a yellow circle.

In the Ozarks, it's a common sight to see, and it may leave area residents asking why this particular item is hopping off the shelves. I've personally owned and worn a Bass Pro hat before, and I didn't know I was sporting a fashionable item.

A report in The Wall Street Journal titled "How a $6 Bass Pro Shops Hat Became a Fashion Trend" points a spotlight on the product.

For Jesse Alvarado, a 25-year-old restaurant worker from Los Angeles, the hat is a steal, even if he doesn't fish or hunt.

“It’s a simple design, like, you can throw it on with anything," he told The Wall Street Journal.

Alvarado and others are snatching up the hats as soon as they hit Bass Pro's website and stores, according to the report, and some resellers are flipping the product on eBay.

John Paul Morris, Bass Pro's chief customer officer and son of founder Johnny Morris, told The Wall Street Journal that the company has had “kind of a run on our trucker Bass Pro caps."

He said the $6 price isn't likely to change as the hats are a great marketing tool for the outdoor retailer.

“We love seeing our customers out there wearing their Bass Pro hats," he said in the article.

The notion of a home-grown success story is nothing new for Bass Pro, as Johnny Morris famously started the concept out of his father's liquor store in town.

Still, it's nice to see a product from Springfield making the rounds in the fashion world.

Here's a tip of the hat to Bass Pro and its newest sensation.

Johnny used to sell the hats for a really low price, like 99 cents. What a smart guy. The city should hire Johnny for some merchandising tips. Seriously. Look at how successfully John has gotten folks to come here and open their wallets. Someone should ask him what he'd do if he were mayor or city manager.
