BKD LLP Southern Missouri practice unit manager Gary Schafer is one of two newly elected partners to join the national accounting firm’s governing board.

BKD’s Governing Board makes policy on strategic issues, firm growth and partnership matters, according to a news release. Firm officials say the 11-member board comprises its forward-thinking leaders.

Schafer is the managing partner of the Springfield, Joplin and Branson offices. He leads the peer reviews BKD performs for large national firms and also serves as a member of the National Peer Review Committee of the American Institute of CPAs.

The firm also appointed Debbie Scanlon, who works out of the Houston, Texas, market. She leads the national financial services group in BKD’s South Region. Scanlon has 30 years of experience in audit and consulting services to financial institutions and is a two-time award winner in the Independent Bankers Association of Texas.

Another recent appointment for Scanlon was by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who added her to the state’s Finance Commission, according to the release.

Schafer currently is the only local member on the Springfield-based firm’s governing board, according to the full list provided by company officials. It comprises BKD’s CEO, currently Tom Watson, its four regional managing partners and six additional partners. Schafer’s appointment is for three years.
